Sex

Are you ready?

The decision to have sex is an important one and the first time should be special. You can’t have your first time twice and many people have regrets about having sex before they are ready. The only way to make it a good experience is to make sure you are both sure about your decision and that you have contraception sorted.

How do I know if I am ready?

  • Do you feel you could say no and that would be okay?
  • Are you sure nobody is putting pressure on you?
  • Have you checked that your boyfriend/girlfriend is ready too?
  • Have you thought about condoms and contraception (something that stops you from getting pregnant) and got it sorted?
  • Are you sure you won’t regret it tomorrow?
  • Are you sure you’re not just doing it to keep up with friends?

If you are still worried then talk to someone. There are many services that can advise and support you in Bristol. It doesn’t matter whether you are gay, lesbian, heterosexual, or bisexual – these services are there for you.

Fact: The average age of first sex is 16!

Alcohol, drugs and the first time

Let’s face it, the first time can be really scary but taking drugs or alcohol won’t make it better! For blokes it can stop them getting an erection and for both boys and girls it can effect judgement and behavior.

If you think you need to take drugs or drink before having sex, the chances are you’re not ready. Speak to your partner and chat about waiting. Or, if you are ready but really nervous, think about taking it slowly.

We’ve got a whole page on alcohol, drugs and sex for more advice and information.
