You're Welcome

Information for services on how to get accredited as ‘Young People Friendly’ (based on the You’re Welcome Quality Criteria)

Health care providers that offer services to young people aged 11-19 in Bristol can now gain accreditation to show that they are a ‘Young People Friendly’ service.

The ‘Young People Friendly’ programme is based on the Department of Health ‘You’re Welcome’ quality criteria. The quality criteria provide good practice guidance of what will improve patient experience and health outcomes for young people. Use of the quality criteria also helps to encourage young people to share in decisions about their health and to increase effective use of NHS and public health services.

Young People Friendly covers 5 main themes:

  1. Access and environment
  2. Staff training, confidentiality and consent
  3. Involvement of young people
  4. Publicity and joined-up working
  5. Health issues for adolescents

There are also additional sections for sexual and reproductive health services and specialist child and adolescent mental health services.

How do services become ‘Young People Friendly’ accredited?

Services need to complete a self assessment toolkit. The Ypf Toolkit and Guidance can be downloaded here.

  • For each of the criteria, services need to provide evidence to demonstrate that they are achieving the required standard.
  • Before completing the toolkit it is a good idea to complete an Action Plan and read our Top Tips.
  • Once completed the toolkit should be submitted to NHS Bristol in order to verify the evidence provided and offer further support if needed.
  • A Step By Step Guide on how to gain the Young People Friendly quality mark in Bristol can be found here
