Doctor's Surgeries

Many local doctors’ surgeries take part in the 4YP scheme. This means you can go to them for any concerns about health issues that might be bothering you. This includes sexual health, relationships and contraception:

Periods
Condoms
Skin problems
Puberty
Relationships
Stop smoking advice
Contraception
Drug or alcohol worries
STI testing & treatment
Weight worries
Emergency (after sex) contraception
Pregnancy testing & advice

You can be sure you’ll be treated with respect. Also, they won’t pass on anything you have told them, unless they tell you first and you don’t even have to be registered at the surgery.

How do I make an appointment

Either call to make an appointment, or just turn up and ask for a 4YP appointment. It doesn’t matter if the surgery you are visiting is not your usual doctor’s practice.

Will you tell my parents?

No. They keep your visit confidential, even if you are under 16. That means that they won’t pass on anything that you have discussed, unless they think you are in serious danger. In that case, they would always talk to you about it first.

What will happen when I ask for a 4YP appointment?

The receptionist will ask you to fill in a 4YP card. Just tick a box to show the reason for your visit. This saves you the embarrassment of saying out loud what you need. A doctor or nurse will then see you as soon as they can.

Can I ask to see either a female or male?

Yes. You can request who you want to see. The 4YP surgery will do their best, depending on the availability of the team.

Can I see somone by myself?

Yes, the doctors and nurses are happy to see you by yourself, so you don’t need a parent or carer with you, even if you are under 16 (unless you want to). You can bring a boyfriend, girlfriend or mate along for support.
