What it is

Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection. Chlamydia affects both men and women. About 1 in 10 sexually active young people tested have chlamydia. Most do not have any signs or symptoms and will not know that they’ve got it. A simple test will show if you have it — but don’t worry, the treatment is simple, effective and free.

Symptoms

Most people infected with Chlamydia do not have any symptoms; they feel and look perfectly well. A simple test will show if you have it — but don’t worry, the treatment is simple, effective and free.

How it is treated

Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics. However, if left untreated it can have serious long term health implications, and may lead to infertility (being unable to have children). New methods of testing for Chlamydia are now available which will allow easier and more widespread screening of the infection.

In Bristol there is a confidential Chlamydia Screening service that you can access for free. The test is simple, painless and self-taken (you don’t need to be examined). The test used locally also screens for gonorrhoea which is a less common infection that can also lead to long–term problems.
