Talk to your teenager about sex this summer

Summer is the time for holiday romances – and the ideal opportunity for parents to talk to their children about sex and relationships.

Throughout July we’re promoting our 4YP resources for parents to help them talk to their children about growing up, puberty, sex and relationships. There will be posters in Cabot Circus and The Mall, and a series of ads on local radio.

Tips for parents on talking to their children about sex and relationships are available on this website by clicking on ‘for parents’. All the information was created together with Bristol parents and is a direct result of parents’
requests for more support and advice.

Councillor Clare Campion-Smith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “During the summer holidays, families often get to spend more time relaxing together and this can be a great time to talk to children about sex and relationships. For young people, the summer can also be a time when they get involved in new relationships, so it’s especially important they know about safe sex and how to look after themselves.”

Teenage Pregnancy Strategy Co-ordinator at NHS Bristol, Anne Colquhoun,
said: “We know from research that parents who talk to their children about sex and relationships empower them to delay first sex and practice safe sex, so this is a really important part of our work to reduce teenage pregnancy and STI rates in the city.”

Courses for parents are also available across the city to help parents talk to their children about growing up, relationships and puberty. To find out more, click here.
